The Grass Does Sway.../Why This Anguish? (2012)

For SATB Choir and String Ensemble

Score (PDF): viewable, not printable

While I was finishing up my student teaching I ended up getting a long term sub position in the same district. This was amazing because it allowed me to build connections and network with some very incredible teachers. I ended up meeting my current composition teacher, Dr. David Sampson. Before I left I spoke with the choir director and asked to write a piece for his select choir.

I had a good friend of mine from Rutgers write the text for the piece. The first movement is contemplative as if the listener is on a walk in the country. The text paints a very serene and tranquil picture. The second movement is from the perspective of a lover who has been scorned. It is angry, confused, and questions the world for the unfavorable turn of events that the speaker has undergone. It is a stark contrast from the first movement.
